English rockers The Stranglers returned to Guildford yesterday (31 January) to commemorate one of it’s most iconic music spaces.

The Star Inn serves not only as a pub but as a renowned live venue, with the ‘Back Room’ dedicated to hosting live performances. The town favourite, is a cultural setting and was home to the group’s first ever gig in 1975.

Thursday saw The Stranglers return to The Inn to award it with a PRS For Music Heritage Award. The prestigious accolade ‘celebrate the genesis of icons in local, live music venues.’ The award is handed out to venues that have been integral in creating music history and giving big names their first break.

The band presented the plaque outside the venue, watched by supporters and press who had congregated outside. The members were also joined by The Mayor of Guildford and PRS For Music chairman, Nigel Elderton.

The venue’s music license is unfortunately at threat due to noise complaints, made to Guilford Council, with an online petition appealing against the decision at over 31,000 signatures.

After the presentation, the band performed a mini set in the venue to a lucky audience. The Stranglers will be kicking off their ‘Back on the Tracks’ tour next month.
